The Rise of Metal Roofing in the U.S.
Unlocking the Potential of Metal Roofing in the United States
The United States is a vast landscape of diverse climates and architectural styles, demanding a versatile and durable roofing solution. Metal roofing has emerged as a top choice, offering both aesthetic appeal and exceptional performance across the nation. This resource page delves into the world of metal roofing — Complete Guide in the U.S., exploring its benefits, key players, installation tips, and regional considerations.
The Rise of Metal Roofing in the U.S.
Metal roofing has experienced a significant surge in popularity in the United States over the past decade. According to the Metal Roofing Manufacturers Association (MRMA), the market share of metal roofing installations increased from 1.5% in 2010 to nearly 7% in 2020, demonstrating a growing trend among homeowners and commercial property owners alike. This shift can be attributed to several key factors:
- Durability and Longevity: Metal roofing materials, such as aluminum, steel, and copper, are known for their exceptional resistance to severe weather conditions, including high winds, snow, and hail—common phenomena across many U.S. regions. With proper installation, these roofs can last for 30 years or more, outperforming traditional shingles.
- Energy Efficiency: Metal roofing reflects sunlight, effectively reducing heat transfer into buildings, leading to lower cooling costs. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that metal roofs can save up to 40% in cooling energy compared to traditional dark-colored shingles.
- Low Maintenance: Unlike shingles, metal roofs do not require frequent repairs and replacements, saving homeowners time and money in the long run.
Key Players in the Metal Roofing Industry
The U.S. metal roofing market is served by a robust network of manufacturers, suppliers, and installers. Here are some prominent players:
- MLA (Metal Roofing Manufacturers Association): This industry trade group represents leading metal roofing manufacturers, advocating for industry standards and consumer education.
- Demco Industries: A family-owned business based in Michigan, Demco specializes in custom-fabricated metal roofing systems, catering to both residential and commercial projects.
- U.S. Metal Roofing: This California-based company offers a wide range of metal roofing products and has gained recognition for its innovative design options and excellent customer service.

Types of Metal Roofing: A Comparative Look
The market offers various metal roofing styles, each with unique characteristics:
- Standard Metal Panels: These are the most common and affordable options, featuring an attached underlayment for added protection. They are suitable for low-slope or flat roofs.
- Corrugated Metal Roofing: Known for its wave-like pattern, corrugated metal provides excellent strength and durability, making it ideal for steep-slope roofs commonly found in the U.S. Midwest and Northeast.
- Copper and Aluminum Shingles: These offer a more traditional shingle look while providing the benefits of metal roofing. They are lightweight and highly resistant to corrosion.
| Type | Weight | Price Range | Suitable For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Metal Panels | Light to Medium | $30 - $70 per square foot | Low-slope, flat roofs |
| Corrugated Metal | Medium to Heavy | $60 - $120 per square foot | Steep-slope roofs |
| Copper/Aluminum Shingles | Light | $70 - $200 per square foot | Various roof styles |
Installation: Best Practices for Metal Roofing
Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of metal roofs. Here are some essential tips:
- Choose Qualified Installers: Ensure contractors are licensed, insured, and have experience with metal roofing. The National Roofers Guild is a trusted resource for finding certified professionals.
- Inspect Local Building Codes: Metal roofing must comply with regional building codes. Check with your local building department to understand specific requirements.
- Underlayment Protection: Install a suitable underlayment to provide an additional layer of defense against moisture and extreme temperatures.
- Gutting and Flashing: Properly flash and gut the roof to ensure water cannot penetrate joints and seams.
- Regular Maintenance: Inspect your metal roof annually for signs of wear and tear to maintain its optimal performance.
Regional Considerations for Metal Roofing in the U.S.
The choice of metal roofing can vary across regions due to climate, architectural styles, and cultural preferences:
- Northeast and Midwest: Steep-slope roofs are common, making corrugated metal roofing a popular choice for its strength and durability.
- Southeast: Homeowners often prefer metal roofing's low maintenance and energy efficiency, with styles like copper and aluminum shingles gaining traction.
- Western States: The diverse climate and architectural styles lead to varied metal roofing applications, from standard panels on residential homes to more specialized designs for commercial buildings.
- Climate-Specific Considerations: In areas prone to extreme weather, such as hurricanes or snowstorms, proper installation and additional reinforcements are essential to ensure the roof's longevity.
In conclusion, metal roofing in the United States offers a sustainable, durable, and aesthetically pleasing option for property owners. With its growing popularity and the support of dedicated industry groups, metal roofing is poised to play an even greater role in shaping the nation's roofing landscape.
